Biology, ecology and impacts of johnshongrass [Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers] and the role of glyphosate and non-chemical alternative practices for the management of this weed in Europe.

03 April 2019

Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers. belongs to the most common and troublesome weeds with a worldwide dispersal and increasing distribution in many European countries. In the present project funded by BAYER EUROPE and led by Assoc. Prof. Ilias Travlos, a scientific network was built and information on the biology, ecology, agricultural, economic and environmental impact of johnsongrass was collected.

Furthermore, in terms of integrated weed management (IWM), special attention was paid to the role of glyphosate as confirmed by the conducted field trials in arable and perennial crops in many European countries, while some of the factors that affect its efficacy and should be taken into account were also discussed. Finally, several non-chemical alternative methods (cultural, mechanical, thermal, biological etc.) for johnsongrass management were also presented.
